Dear Parents and Guardians of 2nd Grade,

I am very excited to be returning to OLCA after a long, difficult recovery following surgery earlier this school year. I am even more excited to work with your children (many of whom I am quite familiar with!) as they prepare for the challenges that await them in 3rd grade.

For those that might not know me, I have been at OLCA for six years, having taught 1st grade for two years, as well as 2nd grade for three years. I entered the current school year as the 5th grade teacher, and will now be working in 2nd grade for the last trimester of the 2016-2017 school year. These next three months will be rigorous, and this week will be a busy one. I will discuss and reinforce expectations as well as determine a plan for success for the class going forward. We will focus primarily on essential ELA and Mathematics skills, as well as prepare them for cursive handwriting, which is required in grades 3 and above.

They will also receive numerous assessments in both ELA and Mathematics over the next week, so that I can determine their individual and group needs. Title I Literacy and Mathematics will continue as scheduled, as well as any other special courses (Gym, SPART, Music).

There will also be a schedule in place for parent-teacher conferences this coming Friday, March 24th. Look out for information regarding that during the week.

Welcome Back! What a start to our week - a blizzard tomorrow so no school then and possibly Wednesday closed also. As a result, you will notice that the children received a larger volume of work in each subject. This should enable them to complete it tonight and tomorrow.

Math - Create 20 subtraction problems with regrouping. These should all be 3 digit numbers.

Science - Pick 5 of the vocabulary words that you learned last week with Ms. Ruby and write their definitions in your notebooks. Also draw a picture for each word.

Welcome Back from Break,

I hope everyone enjoyed the week off and were able to spend it with family and friends. This week March begins with Ash Wednesday when the children have mass at St. Teresa Church at 10am. Listed below are this week’s spelling words, upcoming exams and events, and the homework. The new topics for the children’s journals for March are also listed above the homework. The journals that I still have will be returned to the students by Wednesday so that they can begin to write about these new topics.

Social Studies: Complete the Immigrant Interview Report that’s due Monday. Read the article “A Trip to the Immigration Museum” that is in your folders. We will have a short quiz on it on Monday.

ELA - Write a paragraph of at least 5 sentences using 5 of your spelling words. The paragraph should be about one main topic. Be as creative and imaginative as you can and have fun with it.

Math - workbook pgs. 425 and 426

Wednesday:

ELA - Write another paragraph of at least 5 sentences using 5 different spelling words. Again this should be about one main idea but different from the one you wrote last night. They should also be equally as creative.

Math - make up 5 subtraction problems with no regrouping and 5 subtraction problems with regrouping in your notebooks and solve them. These should all be 3 digit numbers.

ELA – Take notes in your notebook about Chapter 21 in your Superkids reader with at least 8 sentences. Then write a prediction of what you think will happen next which should be at least 5 sentences. Write sentences for any 10 of your spelling words. Continue writing in the journals. I’ve given them all back with comments so enjoy.

Social Studies – In your notebooks, write 5 sentences about why Martin Luther King Jr. was an important person.

Religion – Take notes of at least 5 sentences from the next session in the Religion text book.

Math – make corrections to the take home tests on pages 440 and 441 and then make up 10 of your own 3 digit addition problems in your notebooks.

Wednesday

ELA – Please write notes of at least 10 sentences from Chapter 22 of the Superkids reader in your notebooks. Write sentences for the rest of your spelling words in your notebooks. Continue to write in your Journals. I’m really enjoying reading them.

Math – Make up 5 addition and 5 subtraction problems and write and solve in your notebook.

Science – Read pages B47 to B57 and take notes of 8 sentences in your notebook.

I hope all is well and I apologize for not posting the homework yesterday. I had a family emergency so I was absent Monday and am out today, Tuesday, also. I will be returning tomorrow. I have the children’s journals and will return them tomorrow. I continue to be impressed by their imaginations and creativity and look forward to having them continue their journal writing tomorrow night.

Tuesday

ELA – Write in Journals. The new topics for January are listed below tonight’s homework. I will be collecting them again on Friday. Backpack p.83. Finish Writing your predictions about the Superkids pages we read today and what you think will happen next.

Math – Subtraction problems in workbook p. 327

Science – Take notes from pages B15 – B19. You need to write at least 10 sentences

Wednesday

ELA – Write in Journals. They are due again on Friday. Some children did not receive the backpack page 85 which they wrote as homework for tonight in their planners. I will give this to them tomorrow for homework if they did not receive them.

Math – pages 404 and 405

Science – Draw pictures of both water habitats in your Science notebooks. Write the name of the habitat and feel free to color them.

* I sent home some classroom rules as well as information about how they can receive stickers for following those rules. Please review them at home with your child. They were given sticker charts to keep in their desks which allows them to choose a prize from our Classroom Treasure Box. Once they have earned 30 stickers they can go to the box. If you have any questions about this, please email me at jryan@olcacademy.net.

Finally, I have two requests. The first is a reminder that all of the children should have 5 sharpened pencils at the beginning of each week and should maintain that supply. The other request is for donations of paper towels and tissues for the class. I have been buying these supplies on my own and will continue to do so but I really would like to replenish the supply as much as possible. As always, with your support and help, you make our 2nd grade an even better place to learn and grow.
